Fox DNA Project - Animal Biology

FAQs

Q. What does a fox DNA sampling kit contain?

A. The kit is the size of a small padded envelope (127 x 178 mm) and contains an information pamphlet explaining the aims of the project and how to take samples, and also three to five 2 mL tubes into which samples from foxes go.

Q. How long will the project be running for?

A. The project will run until the end of 2007, but I will finish collecting DNA in September.  This means that you do not need to send your samples in immediately if you would like to collect some more.

Q. I've filled all my sample tubes, can I request some more?

A. Yes, please give me a call (freecall 1800 633 097) or email and I will send you some more.

Q. How fresh do samples need to be?

A. The fresher the better!  Ideally the samples should be less than a few days old.  If you are unsure of the age of a sample (for example if it is a roadkill), please make a note to that effect on the sample.

Theoretically older samples will still yield DNA.  However, the DNA is likely to be degraded (fragmented) by biochemical activity, making results more difficult to obtain.

Q. Do I need to refrigerate the samples?

A. No, there is a preservative solution contained in the sample tubes that slows the degradation of samples.  However, for longer term storage, samples should be stored in a cool dark place (just as you would dry food).

Q. Do you want several foxes from one location or from different locations?

A. I am interested in both because that way I can investigate the relationships among foxes at all scales.
